Further to yesterday's post Derwent Art Prize 2014 - ineligible drawing wins get-go prize?,  the other prizewinners are detailed below - amongst photographs of the winners where I accept them too my comments.

Derwent Art Prize 2014: People gathering for the proclamation of who had won the prizes

Second Prize

Second Prize ( £3,500 ):  ‘Hörnan’ (coloured pencils) yesteryear Brian Morris.  Brian was born inward Commonwealth of Australia but currently lives inward Sweden too he was telling me most the fact his attendance at lastly night's preview went downwards to the wire every bit he had to teach a visa!

I looked up Hörnan and it way 'corner'
“It is a self-portrait which describes my feelings of living inward the modern world.”Brian Morris

Third Prize / UKCPS Award

Patsy Whiting won both the Third Prize (£1,000) too the Great Britain Coloured Pencil Society Award for Excellence (£250) amongst her coloured pencil drawing amongst the curious championship of 'Garden garage marriage’.

Patsy comes from Loughborough inward the Midlands. She seems to specialise inward figurative too floral subjects lit amongst chiaroscuro lighting too sells her figurative drawings every bit fast every bit she tin practice them. I've no incertitude inward my withdraw heed that this volition i of those sold inward the exhibition.

Interestingly the icon of her operate on the website loses its background too a lot of people commented how much to a greater extent than they could run across inward the operate inward the gallery - too that's a skillful comment - it's to a greater extent than interesting!

- nosotros were trying to abide by an angle to avoid reflections!
coloured pencils on dark Colourfix paper
Those of us who accept worked on Art Spectrum Colourfix earlier are non inward the to the lowest degree flake surprised to abide by out that's the back upwardly which Patsy produces her operate on. She applies her coloured pencils too then it allows parts of the back upwardly to present through which adds a really textured experience to her immaculate command of both tonal values too color palette.
Recent operate depicts moody, dark, all the same life, inward a realistic style. The operate is created using soft coloured pencil on dark pastel newspaper too though technically a drawing, looks similar a painting. Roses are a favourite discipline at the moment, for the sculptural character of the form. I similar to contrast them amongst battered, mechanical or man-made forms.

Her operate has a flavor of the blossom too institute drawings of Paul Emsley who industrial plant inward pastels. I discovered that Patsy, similar me, is a large admirer of Paul's work. I wishing I could live one-half every bit skillful every bit either of them when I endeavor to practice the same thing! However I haven't tried flowers on colourfix for a long fourth dimension - but Patsy has prompted me to leave of absence my stock too accept or too then other go.

I know that UKCPS are inviting Patsy to exhibit them at their side yesteryear side Annual Exhibition too then hopefully at that topographic point volition live or too then other chance to run across her operate inside the side yesteryear side year.

Now to the other awards!

The Young Artist Award - for artists aged 25 or under

I'm a large fan of the artwork which won this laurels - fifty-fifty though it's awkward to await at. Natasha-Anne Aplin comes from the North East too is working towards a fine fine art marking at Sunderland University (just graduated?).

The drawings inward Devolution Series are of a kid who appears to accept the habits too features of a 'rougher'  and much older human ( piercings, tattos, smokes too drinks etc). First you lot run across the faces too are riveted yesteryear these - if you lot don't desire to await away. The serial creates a curious "look at me/look away now!" tension. Then you lot ponder the format and, finally, you lot spot that at the meridian of the drawing are the pale drawings inward crayon - done yesteryear a child

I wrote downwards inward my notes 'there's a brilliant contrast betwixt the icon of the kid too the images made yesteryear the child.'. It's really clever - too I'm non inward the to the lowest degree flake surprised it won a prize.

She uses the traditional concept of
anthropomorphic drawings to reverberate too render social comment.

She told me that her drawing reflected the herd mentality of or too then of the people who engaged inward the looting of shops during the riots.

too finally.....

H5N1 Special Commendation is awarded to Katarzyna Wiesiolek  from Rewal inward Poland for her charcoal drawing entitled ‘Immanence V’ (bottom left below) She has won major scholarships too participated inward of import drawing competitions prior to this one.

Her operate was sure enough i which caught my oculus - although my preference was the serial every bit a whole.

Special commendation for Katarzyna Wiesiolek
