Here are my side past times side ii video interviews amongst artists winning prizes at the the BP Portrait Award 2014 Ceremony,  held this calendar week inwards the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery inwards London.

Video interviews below are with:
  • 2nd prizewinner - Richard Twose (UK)
  • 3rd prizewinner - David Jon Kasssan (USA)
All 3 of the prizewinners bring something to learn us virtually the procedure of existence selected for the BP Portrait Award
  • An awareness that you lot actually demand to enhance your game as well as pigment your real best if you lot desire to hold upward selected. All had idea virtually entering the contest for a long fourth dimension earlier they submitted this year's entry.
  • The advantages of choosing a model amongst an interesting caput as well as human face upward as well as backstory. None of the models were young. All bring faces which bring lived a life albeit they bring all led real unlike lives. I approximate that gives grapheme to the portrait likewise equally making epitome peel a lot to a greater extent than interesting!
  • They all bring a passion for epitome which comes through strongly inwards each interview
  • All were humble virtually their ain selection. All felt real strongly that only existence selected for the exhibition was a massive achievement of itself - since the move of solely 55 artists is chosen from submissions past times over 2,377 artists
Both Richard as well as David agreed that Thomas's portrait of Man inwards a Plaid Blanket was a real worthy winner - as well as that you lot cannot musical rhythm out inspecting a epitome inwards mortal to catch the pigment on the surface of the back upward as well as what the creative mortal has done amongst it.

In improver I would complaint that ALL THREE of the prizewinning portraits were of the caput as well as upper trunk as well as the hands likewise equally the human face upward were real evident inwards all three. Hence you lot mightiness acquire selected if you lot move into only a caput but I dubiety you'll hold upward shortlisted.

So - on to the interviews.

An interview amongst Richard Twose

Jean Woods  by Richard Twose
Second Prize (£10,000): Richard Twose (age 51 - 01.04.1963) for Jean Woods (900 x 600mm, crude oil on board).

Judges’ comments - Jean Woods

The judges at nowadays recognised the potent personality coming through inwards this portrait. The fashionable Modernist character of the epitome was good judged as well as seemed to reverberate the dependent area perfectly’
Richard Twose is a Bath-based fine art instructor (for ii days a calendar week - inwards a large 6th cast college inwards Bath).  His portrait is of Jean Woods, historic catamenia 76, a grandmothe of four, a onetime fashion model as well as the star of the documentary Fabulous Fashionistas. Listen to the interview to detect out how Richard came to catch Jean as well as pigment her.
Sometimes equally Jean was talking, especially virtually her much-missed belatedly husband, she reminded me of Rembrandt's Portrait of Margaretha de Geer. Jean has a similar intensity as well as honesty inwards her gaze. I wanted to capture that sense of someone who has learnt to hold upward almost fearless, looking forwards to life withal but amongst a swell richness of sense behind her’.

An interview amongst David Jon Kassan

Letter to my Mum past times David Jon Kassan

Judges’ comments - Letter to my Mom

‘The judges were moved past times the palpable human relationship betwixt the sitter as well as his woman bring upward inwards this portrait. They felt in that place was a repose inwards the pose as well as were specially struck past times the artist’s attending to his mother’s hands’.
David's portrait of his woman bring upward includes a written tribute inwards Hebrew inscribed into the painting. His woman bring upward is non a willing sitter but consented to sit down when she was offered a pigment of her grandson Lucas.
‘My move is real personal as well as heartfelt. It’s my visual diary, as well as thus my menage unit of measurement as well as loved ones construct upward a large business office of what as well as why I paint. My parents bring ever been inspirational to paint. This portrait is a alphabetic character to my mom, who hates it when I pigment her. But I say her inwards the epitome that past times epitome her, it is my agency of spending fourth dimension amongst her, contemplating our human relationship as well as fourth dimension together, my earliest memories’.
The Hebrew text painted onto the portrait inwards a higher house the sitter reads:
‘Dear Mom,/ This epitome is my agency to pass to a greater extent than fourth dimension amongst you./ My agency to meditate on our life together./ And all of the earliest memories I bring / All of my earliest memories from you.’

Note: I should explicate that both interviews were held inwards the noisiest BP Portrait Award Press View I've ever been inwards - lots of chatting going on. Consequently the stance of faces was dictated past times how unopen I needed to hold upward to construct certain the microphone picked upward their voices!
