Brand New!! Drawing People

Given I've been commenting on other people icon portraits inward my reviews of the Portrait Artist of the Year series, it occurred to me that mayhap those who aren't aware of my background mightiness intend I had roughly nerve!

So I idea I'd improve flora roughly credentials!

I don't pigment (I'm a "dry media" person) but I do draw.

I've also been drawing people for years.

Over the years I've also studied real many onetime principal drawings - which is how come upwards I similar to hatch when I'm drawing inward pen in addition to ink in addition to coloured pencil.

Plus I've commented on real many drawings in addition to paintings of people past times contemporary artists over the final 12 years every bit purpose of my reviews of exhibitions of portraiture eg the BP Portrait Award

no contour lines in addition to no underdrawing
all hatching in addition to eyeballing the model

Before my tenosynovitis inward my drawing mitt got bad (Don't EVER interview all 24-hour interval for 2 weeks non-stop!) I used to larn to a weekly "Drawing a Head" degree at the Princes Drawing School (now Royal Drawing School) - non in addition to therefore much for the tuition every bit having models to draw.

There I used to "eyeball" the models in addition to inward TWO HOURS used to progress through a serial of personal challenges which went a piffling agency beyond drawing the head

Draw 2 people, amount size, inward graphite on a large canvas of paper

The interesting affair almost drawing 2 models is getting the perspective right
and making them await every bit if they are genuinely sat inward the chair (or on a cushion)

I ever drew inward the backgrounds every bit it gave me a scaffolding matrix
against which to stair out off parts of the body!

Draw the models in addition to the other artists

Then at that spot was 2 models in addition to the artists on the other side of the room......

I spent many weeks doing this until I decided I directly needed the challenge of pen in addition to ink.....

Man on chair on plinth, adult woman on sofa - in addition to 2 artists drawing

Drawing inward pen in addition to ink (i.e. NO ERASING!)

One of my favourite exercises which I made upwards every bit a challenge was to draw the caput of i somebody from iii sides inward pen in addition to ink inward 2 hours. I had 2 x 45 minutes fourth dimension slots in addition to i of thirty minutes. I preferred the 45 infinitesimal ones - thirty minutes was a only piffling chip besides short.

These iii heads are on a canvas of A3 size cartridge paper

Drawing inward pen in addition to ink - amongst no underdrawing in addition to no contours!

This I decided was the ultimate challenge otherwise known every bit how to brand myself REALLY LOOK!

So the challenge is to depict a caput and
  • complete the drawing inward pen in addition to ink - using hatching
  • with no underdrawing
  • ABSOLUTELY NO CONTOURS i.e. hatching upwards to where the contour would hold upwards if at that spot were one!
See the overstep prototype for i such drawing which was completed inward 45 minutes on a canvas of A3 cartridge paper.

Drawing inward colour

Every directly in addition to i time to a greater extent than I would convey inward my coloured pencils in addition to depict inward colour; optically mix colours on the newspaper - in addition to erase his highlights using my battery eraser! (Buzz, buzz!)
