Review: Majestic Guild Of Portrait Painters - Annual Exhibition 2013

This is a belated posting of the balance of my review of the Annual Exhibition of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.  It's essentially going to survive a film post service every bit I'm having a few problems alongside vision together with writing long posts correct now. (I intend I perchance overdid it a chip final week. I'm also offset to wonder what it's going to survive similar afterward the minute oculus is done side yesteryear side Thursday!  Hopefully fewer headaches when using my eyes for unopen work!)

The fundamental points I made a regime annotation of were:
  • there seemed to survive to a greater extent than of a mix this twelvemonth betwixt where the operate yesteryear the RP members was located together with where the operate yesteryear artists from the opened upward entry were hung

Main (West) Gallery
  • I actually liked the North Gallery.  It seemed to me to survive real contemporary together with where roughly of the to a greater extent than exciting together with odd portraits were hung.  It seemed to survive real pop together with real crowded - at to the lowest degree at the PV!  (I should add together the exhibition inwards the Threadneedle Space was also decidedly real contemporary - y'all tin laissez passer on the axe run across images of this in Jan Mikulka wins £20,000 SELF Portrait Prize

    South Wall, Main Gallery
    • By agency of contrast, in that place were a few besides many irksome corporate portraits yesteryear RP members inwards the chief West Gallery .  Maybe it was only that the subjects were a chip to a greater extent than of the grayness adjust brigade compared to roughly of the subjects inwards the North Galley.  (By its nature a lot of operate done yesteryear portrait artists relates to commissions - honour out more)
    • I know I was looking for the knockout portrait - together with didn't honour 1 - apart from prizewinners.  However I did similar those on the North Wall - they were much to a greater extent than interesting inwards price of subjects, composition together with colour.

Portraits at the Entrance (see below)
    • At the entrance in that place was a brusk run of iv smaller portraits which made me linger.  One of them was Anthony William's portrait of Sir Donald Sinden.  I've been studying Anthony Williams paintings inwards egg tempera for years - the designing of the mark-making is absolutely fascinating - together with ever creates a icon alongside affect together with presence.  All the to a greater extent than remarkable for then much of it existence done from life.

    Full size painting: Egg Tempera 56 x 46cm, 22" x 18"
    • A icon yesteryear final year's BP Portrait Award Winner - Aleah Chapin - was also hung.  I knew I was going to run across her operate over again inwards the United Kingdom of Great Britain together with Northern Ireland of Britain together with Northern Republic of Ireland but hadn't anticipated quite then chop-chop every bit she's been having a real successful twelvemonth since her BP win.
Maybe we're non then dissimilar yesteryear Aleah Chapin
    fossil oil 46 x 46cm (19" x 19")
    • It was also interesting to run across self-portraits yesteryear RP members inwards the chief gallery. I loved the twosome of self portraits yesteryear John Wonnacott CBE Hon. RP (In illustration you're wondering, he gear upward a mirror on an easel inwards forepart of a bay window).  He does seem to survive a portrait painter who is non satisfied alongside the ultra conventional (some of y'all may know him improve every bit the portrait painter chosen to pigment the Royal Family for the Queen Mother's 100th Birthday - 'Royal Family, a Centenary Portrait' which y'all tin laissez passer on the axe run across inwards the National Portrait Gallery). I was less wowed yesteryear the self portraits yesteryear fine art lodge luminaries Ken Howard together with Jason Bowyer - but suspect that's the coloration of these portraits.  I preferred June Mendoza's portrait of Ken Howard.  It said to a greater extent than almost the man.

The overall touchstone of portraits on display has ever been high - withal it seemed to me that the motility to digital entry (introduced final year) together with the novel prize for self-portraiture this twelvemonth had yet over again upped the character of the portraits inwards the exhibition.  Work via the opened upward entry was a real high standard.

The exhibition continues until 24th May at the Mall Galleries.
