The Private View too Prizegiving was real good attended. It was real practiced to come across a lot of immature faces amidst the artists who attended terminal night. Nobody knew who had won too so nosotros had a few gasps equally the announcements were made!
This post service also covers a review of the exhibition inward the North Gallery at the Mall Galleries.
Derwent Art Prize 2013 - The Selector's Award - Prizewinners
Three industrial plant were chosen past times the selectors to win valuable cash prizes. The selectors were:
- Yvonne Crossley (Director of The Drawing Gallery, Shropshire);
- Fisun Güner (journalist too freelance visual arts writer); and
- Professor Stephen Farthing RA (artist and Rootstein Hopkins Research Chair of Drawing at the University of the Arts, London).
“It's been an interesting procedure helping to select to a greater extent than or less xc industrial plant from an international entry of nearly 3600 pieces. The resulting exhibition is made upwardly of what nosotros considered to hold out the best industrial plant submitted past times both professional person too amateur artists. The exhibit demonstrates a flourishing involvement inward drawing from a broad hit of starting points. I aspect forwards to this opened upwardly contest going from strength to strength inward hereafter years.”Yvonne CrossleyI sympathize that the judges were able to gauge industrial plant based on larger images than those seen online past times people voting for the People's Choice award
In his preamble to the presentation terminal night, Professsor Stephen Farthing made some fundamental points:
- all the judging was done digitally. It's the means most fine art competitions are moving given that it saves an extraordinary amount of expense for both the contest organisers too the entrants.
- all the run inward the gallery looked the means it did on the reckoner screen. Judges were delighted to come across at that topographic point was no mismatch betwixt what they idea they had selected too the artwork inward the exhibition
- all artwork was anonymous inward the judging process. As Professor Farthing revealed, when you're having to aspect through 3,000+ entries it's real hard to larn interested inward a name! It's merely non relevant to the procedure of selection.
- each gauge had a "judge's choice". While at that topographic point was real trivial disagreement almost what was OK too what should hold out selected it was also of import that each Judge was able to exercise a trivial "eccentricity" - too thus each had 1 run which was their alternative alone.
"I intend it's a fantastic exhibition of drawings"Professor Stephen Farthing
- entrants should proceed to submit drawings to fine art competitions. He felt that the calibre of some of the drawings submitted to the contest exceeded those he sees submitted to the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition! He had a real positive feeling almost the lineament of a lot of the run exhibited.
The Derwent Art Prize 2013 prizewinners are equally follows. You tin come across the shortlist that the selectors drew upwardly on the abode page of the website.
First Prize (£5,000) - Walk inward Progress: Koli past times Chrys Allen
Chrys Allen accepting kickoff prize with Professor Stephen Farthing. She gave a real inspiring speech! |
One must also non hold out distracted past times thoughts of the stamina involved inward completing run of this length equally it's a real fine slice of art. Interestingly using a scroll for artwork recording a walk is returning to a real traditional means inward which a trail used to hold out recorded past times topographical artists inward times past. (I call back real vividly seeing 1 at the RA inward 2007 - come across BritArt inward History - RA exhibits admirable collections of British drawings)
This run was on my personal shortlist and I am real much of the view that it's a real worthy winner. I did wonder whether it mightiness take maintain won when I saw how the artwork was set out inward the gallery on Monday. I'm also real pleased to come across pencil fine art beingness created inward ways which mightiness seem odd to many pencil artists who aspire to amend things. In my terminal post service I commented almost this work
Both industrial plant work an odd means of presenting drawings which is non unfamiliar to those who view exhibitions for Drawing Prizes. Food for idea for those fine art societies who set on exhibitions inward pencil media!You tin see a video of the run on YouTube (9 minutes 10 seconds) - it takes you lot along the "walk inward progress" amongst Finnish Landscape equally evidenced past times the drawing inward pencil. It was done spell Chrys was Artist inward Residence inward Koli, North Karelia. Finland.
[Note: Walk inward Progress : Towpath is a afterwards 1 which the 1 I wrongly identified equally the winning run until corrected past times Chrys! Also worth watching.]
Personally, I would take maintain liked to come across the artwork displayed amongst the video. The Drawing Bursary awarded past times NEAC has for sure had video displays of an artwork inward exhibitions at the Mall Gallery earlier now. While evidently the pencil artwork needed to hold out given prominence, it would take maintain been groovy to come across the video inward the gallery equally well. Maybe on an iPad on the wall? This mode of display is oftentimes used at nowadays inward other galleries to display multiple images. The enquiry is whether the creative individual or the gallery provide the iPad!
Chrys Allen is a practising professional person creative individual too fine art tutor. She lives too industrial plant in South East London. Instead of a garden, Chrys has a converted Victorian jam factory/warehouse which is used equally her studio too also equally an exhibition infinite too venue for performances too workshops during local arts festivals. Chrys also industrial plant equally a visiting tutor too workshop leader.
Her enjoyment of too enthusiasm for drawing was real evident inward her real lucid too inspiring spoken communication which she gave terminal nighttime on beingness presented with her kickoff prize. I tin only surmise that those who take maintain Chrys equally their tutor are real lucky students!
Second Prize (£2,500) - London, 2012 by Paul Hiles
This pencil drawing is a large scale view of London from an aerial perspective with reddish double deckers punctuating the streets.Derwent Art Prize for Pencil Art - Second Prize London 2012 past times Paul Hiles (large run inward the centre of wall on left) Graphite |
I'm afraid I didn't spot this equally a potential winner too I intend that's real in all probability because for me all aerial drawings at nowadays take maintain to struggle real hard to avoid beingness set inward the shade by Homage to Anonymous by Gary Lawrence which real deservedly won the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2011
Third Prize (£500) Landscapes & Places - past times Yi Lin Juliana Ong (JULS - Oh dainty great)
Derwent Art Prize for Pencil Art - Third Prize Landscape too Places - a serial of drawings by Yi Lin Juliana Ong graphite |
Juls graduated with an MA inward Communication Art & Design from the Royal College of Art inward 2011. Her industrial plant evolve about the automatic procedure of markings.
The human activeness inward the catamenia past times improvisation plays a real of import role inward my do equally they drive me to seek for the beauty inward an “awe of decipherment”.
Landscapes & Places is a serial made with pencil markings past times automatic repetitive strokes. They were non drawn inward a vogue of its presentation; of which its renderings made non known of its actual outcome. They are mayhap maps— of the unfamiliar places too labyrinths of a subconscious mind...
UKCPS Award for Excellence (£250) - Mirror by Suhyang Seo
The winner of this prize for a run inward coloured pencils was chosen past times the representatives of the United Kingdom Coloured Pencil Society. I'd personally similar to come across to a greater extent than such run which has an emphasis on the fine art kickoff too the media 2d inward the UKCPS exhibition.Derwent Art Prize for Pencil Art - UKCPS Award for Excellence Mirror by Suhyang Seo coloured pencils |
The People's Choice Award
This prize was determined past times online votes based on the digital images on the Derwent Art Prize website. Voting finished at the cease of August.
Last nighttime the winner of the People's Choice Award was announced. Today, Derwent take maintain also announced on the website which industrial plant took 2d too tertiary prizes.
People's Choice Award (£500) - The Majestic Savoy past times Janie Pirie
I rather suspect that this drawing had a strong next amidst members of the UKCPS because it was 1 of the few coloured pencil artworks inward the exhibition too because it has previously won a UKCPS award. It's for sure real impressive!
Janie Pirie is a leading fellow member of the marked tendency towards botanical artists working inward coloured pencils. She is an RHS Gold Medal winning Botanical Artist too Botanical fine art inward coloured pencils). She was awarded her kickoff medal past times the Royal Horticultural Society inward June 2008. In 2009 she went on to win an RHS gilded medal at BBC Gardener’s World Live too was also presented with a crystal vase for ‘Best Botanical Artist inward Show 2009’. She has also been invited to exhibit at the real prestigious Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation inward the USA.

Nab Edge (Watersoluble) past times Tina Mammoser |
The exhibition is inward the North Gallery where it looks real impressive. The real neutral frames of the industrial plant hung (black, white or land wood) too the lack of coloured mats stand upwardly for a meaning contribution to the coherent aspect of this curated exhibition.
I've never been a fan of the narrow dark frame equally it looks also harsh to me for pencil work. I was real impressed past times the graphite coloured frame of the run selected past times my friend Tina Mammoser. It was amazing how having a softer border allowed the artwork to larn to a greater extent than visible. It's a color pencil artists should aspect out for!
It's real apparent that the size boundary got chucked out the window. 182 cm was supposed to hold out the maximum size - withal that translates to us non-metric people equally exactly nether half dozen pes too at to the lowest degree 1 exceeded that inward height. The winner's run is genuinely 10 metres long but tin hold out displayed inside the size boundary - although that doesn't exhibit the run to its best payoff (the celluloid does that).
There was real trivial coloured run inward the exhibition which was something of a surprise when the selection was announced. However I didn't immature lady the color equally much equally I expected to - which was surprising. I intend that's because of the means that the oculus was interested past times the mark-making instead. I intend if to a greater extent than artists working inward color desire to larn into the exhibition they volition quest to notice that skills inward copying photographs don't count for much inward this exhibition. Interpreting is a dissimilar matter.
There was real trivial coloured run inward the exhibition This view includes 3 such industrial plant - too of course of written report coloured pencil tin also hold out black! top left: Albany Sunset Oranges (pastel pencils) past times Beverley Coleclough top right: Five Coots (coloured pencils) past times Alan Woollett Bottom left: Torch Parade (Charcoal) past times Ann Marie Whalley |

Bambina (graphite) by Marta Ravasi |
Overall I intend Derwent has a lot to hold out proud of with this novel exhibition. It
- succeeds inward showing us all what tin hold out done with a hit of pencils;
- reinforces the pencil equally a serious fine art medium;
- emphasises that drawing does non quest to hold out restricted to a specific size or placed inward a matted frame and
- amply demonstrates that there's a lot of real talented artists working with pencils.
Everybody prospective entrant needs to heighten their game if they desire to cash inward one's chips far side past times side year. This exhibition has been such a success that I predict tearing contest side past times side year! I definitely intend that those working inward dry out media/pencils should exit their calendars at nowadays too start planning their run for side past times side year.
