Edit
The Damien Hirst Exhibition is into its finally calendar month at Tate Modern - it closes on ninth September 2012. So why am I forthwith solely exactly getting circular to reviewing it? There are iii reasons:
So on Tuesday I went to come across the exhibition later my infirmary appointment at Barts together with some fourth dimension spent sketching Tate Modern from across the River Thames (see Travels alongside my Sketchbook - Two views across the Millennium Bridge & 'Tales from the Bridge' Soundscape)
The exhibition is a retrospective of his piece of occupation to appointment together with i of the interesting aspects is to come across how themes play out across the years - together with also to realise how few themes in that location receive got been inwards total.
I haven't bought the catalogue which was heavy on pictures together with lite on words thence what follows is pure reaction from me - filtered past times a few days to come across what stuck inwards my mind.
Early industrial plant together with early on career
His early on industrial plant are distinctly unimpressive inwards their concept together with execution - period. It is obvious withal that he likes colour.
What was impressive was the agency he organised the Freeze exhibition inwards 1988 inwards a disused London warehouse together with got diverse fundamental people inwards the fine art earth together with collectors to come across it including Charles Saatchi, Nicholas Serota and Norman Rosenthal, the quondam Exhibitions Secretray of the Royal Academy.
To my hear this underlines the aspect of Hirst which I think he excels at - together with that's the showmanship together with marketing side of having a career every bit an artist. His major contribution to British Art has been to generate to a greater extent than involvement inwards looking at what artists receive got to offer. My personal thought is that he would receive got made a genuinely swell curator or gallery owner. Maybe that's soundless to come? At whatsoever charge per unit of measurement inwards my eyes he's non a swell creative soul - he's a phenomenon.
The character of the workmanship also suggests to me that a real swell bargain of what followed was created past times his assistants to his design.
The Formaldehyde Years
Brit Art" along alongside Tracey Emin's My Bed. (see also Wikipedia - Young British Artists)
Artists who respect an thought which attracts involvement receive got a vogue to repeat it. It's a chip similar films together with sequels. However, it is possible to plough over a signal when it all begins to larn a chip 'samey'.
However - for those who receive got non seen them before - the exhibition does include:
It left me wondering what these industrial plant were similar when they were fresh. After years inwards formaldehyde there's no query that animals get to await real sorry together with real grayness together with the shark together with farm animals are for sure non looking perky.
It also made me wonder whether the challenges of working alongside formaldehyde were what led him to the evolution of his Pharmacy cabinets which for me are lazy art.
Spots together with Spinning
The spot paintings are everywhere, the spin paintings are rather fewer. For me this is when the rather giddy titles started. For Hirst this was when he striking on that unique coin maker - the subject alongside interplanetary space variations none of which genuinely requires the creative soul for execution.
I similar some of the spot paintings. However they're totally meaningless. I regard the titles every bit an elaborate pun or hoax of the fine art market. Read Adrian Searle's review of the recent exhibitions around the globe to larn a sense of how large the spot ikon serial genuinely is - Full circle: the endless attraction of Damien Hirst's spot paintings
The spin paintings are interesting purely from the perspective of looking at them every bit a technical achievement. Again they hateful nothing.
The recycling of life cycles
I was nearing the terminate of the exhibition when I realised that his constant subject of life cycles also generates recycling flies together with butterflies to create novel works
The Bling together with the Luxury Goods Market
As i enters the finally rooms, i cannot assist but hold upward reminded of people alongside likewise much coin who similar things that sparkle. Hirst has been defendant of no longer making fine art thence much every bit items for the luxury goods marketplace for people who receive got to a greater extent than coin than sense.
The industrial plant from before inwards the exhibition are repeated - but this fourth dimension they're shiny together with sparkling. Finally he's caught upward alongside Andy Warhol together with the diamond dust.
These are examples of the 244 industrial plant which went into the famous auction on xv together with xvi September 2008 which took house at the same every bit the financial markets were crashing. Let's non forget that the 244 industrial plant are produced past times a studio which operates inwards ways similar to a manufacturing flora - until Hirst had to lay people off.
I exactly establish these finally rooms to hold upward tacky.
I also respect it hard non to concord alongside Robert Hughes that Hirst functions similar a commercial build when i sees the over-inflated prices for some of the products inwards the dedicated store which forms share of the exhibition. For me, it's aspects such every bit this which diminish his standing inwards the fine art world.
In summary I came away alongside the feeling that Damien Hirst has non had an master thought inwards relation to making fine art for some time. I think I'd receive got preferred to come across a pared downwards exhibition which said "This is what I desire to hold upward remembered for".
It also struck me that this summertime I've seen exhibitions past times ii contemporary artists who both dearest color this summertime - together with who I thought I didn't like. I was real impressed alongside Warhol's piece of occupation together with loved looking at it. However Hirst soundless has a long agency to larn before he impresses me.
The exhibition continues until the ninth September at Tate Modern
Admission £14 (£12.20 concessions) or £15.50 (£13.50 concessions) alongside Gift Aid donation. Open every hateful solar daytime from 10.00–18.00 together with belatedly until 22.00 on Fri to Sunday
- I'm non a fan of Hirst - I'm inwards the Robert Hughes camp.
- I've seen his piece of occupation before inwards the dedicated room at Tate Britain
- I was pretty sure this exhibition was going to describe huge numbers when it starting fourth dimension opened together with I genuinely don't similar viewing crowded exhibitions.

However - for those who receive got non seen them before - the exhibition does include:
- the iconic piece of occupation itself The Physical Impossibility of Death inwards the Mind of Someone Living, inwards which a shark is suspended inwards formaldehyde inwards a piece of occupation which weighs 23 tons. Except for the fact that this isn't the master shark - because that disntegrated! This is a replacement shark
- Mother together with Child Divided (2007) a re-create of the master 1993 exhibit a four-part sculpture of a bisected moo-cow together with calf - or every bit somebody correctly pointed out piece I was in that location it's genuinely a moo-cow inwards calf together with calf. There's a hoof inwards the uterine expanse of the moo-cow together with what appears to hold upward a foetus - but I'm non sure anybody has noticed....... Or perhaps it's some form of elaborate joke?
- A Thousand Years (1990) inwards which the cyle of life is represented by a cow’s head, flies together with insect-o-cutor. One was left inwards no incertitude that this is a fresh head.
It left me wondering what these industrial plant were similar when they were fresh. After years inwards formaldehyde there's no query that animals get to await real sorry together with real grayness together with the shark together with farm animals are for sure non looking perky.

The recycling of life cycles
I was nearing the terminate of the exhibition when I realised that his constant subject of life cycles also generates recycling flies together with butterflies to create novel works
- so the flies which perish every bit share of A Thousand Years presumably are swept upward together with and then plough upward i time to a greater extent than inwards Black Sun (2004) which has a surface covered inwards clusters of dead flies - supposedly every bit a counterpoint to the beauty of the butterfly paintings. He for sure makes reference to the thousands of flies which dies every bit share of the installation inwards the narrative for Black Sun on his website
- Then I realised the butterflyy paintings were recycling the butterflies which died every bit share of the "In together with Out of Love" exhibit in which butterflies hatch out of pupae inwards a humid room together with and then wing about. (His website includes a drawing past times Hirst of his pattern for how this installation works - exercise accept a look)
I think I'd receive got liked the butterfly paintings to a greater extent than if in that location were less of them. Along the lines of "how much coin does i homo need?"
