Edit
On Tuesday I went to come across the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2012 - the largest watercolour contest inwards the United Kingdom of Great Britain in addition to Northern Ireland - at the Mall Galleries. The exhibition includes 92 plant past times 72 artists working inwards watercolour, gouache, acrylic, and/or inks in addition to it's every bit proficient an exhibition of what you lot tin practice alongside water-based paints every bit I've seen this year.
What I especially liked nigh it was the arrive at of subjects, approaches in addition to techniques used past times the dissimilar artists. It includes plant where you lot only stand upwards in addition to stare in addition to endeavour in addition to locomote out how on public the locomote was created,
The exhibition opened on Mon in addition to closes on Sabbatum thus if you lot desire to come across it you lot postulate to larn your skates on!
Prizewinners
Interestingly this year's exhibition included 2 plant past times Kurt Jackson - but he didn't win!
Mark Elsmore won the £10,000 First Prize for his gouache epitome The Potteries National Park.
Mark is a member of the Wirral Society of Arts (2004) in addition to was elected a fellow member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists inwards 2007. He was born inwards the Potteries area of North Staffordshire into a household unit of measurement which had worked in the Pottery Industry for v generations. He is self-taught in addition to has been a professional artist for the lastly xviii years. He's been selected for the Dominicus Times Watercolour Competition on twelve previous occasions.
His commentary on the epitome is every bit follows
The showtime fourth dimension I saw locomote by Paul Emsley was when he won the BP Portrait Prize inwards 2007. I've kept an oculus on his website ever since in addition to noted that he was now focusing on flowers in addition to working inwards a diversity of media. (eg this is a monochrome drawing of flowers inwards chalk in addition to pencil)
I really much admire his dry out brush epitome technique - this is similar epitome miniatures on a large scale! He's previously won this contest inwards 2002 in addition to come upwards third on 2 occasions.

I honour the whole approach to the advertisement of the exhibition this twelvemonth to live really odd. The catalogue is really basic compared to the 1 produced 2 years ago. It covers the prizewinners in addition to a listing of exhibitors in addition to that's it. I assume sponsorship via adverts must convey dried up.
There are supposed to live events during the course of teaching of the week. However at that topographic point is no cite of them on the Parker Harris website or the Mall Galleries website - in addition to the lady at the front end desk didn't convey whatever data either.
Interestingly at that topographic point were people inwards the gallery who didn't realise the exhibition was on.
and finally......
In my opinion, the description "largest watercolour competition" needs to live changed. The RWS Contemporary Watercolour Competition - for non-members held at the Bankside Gallery 24th Feb - 14th March 2012 had significantly to a greater extent than plant inwards its exhibition. If the description is based on the issue of entries thus the issue needs to live published
By agency of contrast, The Dominicus Times Competition does offering the most valuable prize - notwithstanding 1 could combat that The Turner Watercolour Award which is separate betwixt the RWS in addition to the RI is the to a greater extent than prestigious prize given its provenance.

His commentary on the epitome is every bit follows
‘The Potteries National Park is painted in the tradition of Edwardian photographic postcards. Stoke-on-Trent used to live a metropolis crammed alongside terraced houses in addition to pottery factories. Bottle kilns blackened the streets in addition to darkened the skyline. Postcards at the time sarcastically proclaimed: ‘Fresh air from the Potteries’; ‘Stoke soots me’; ‘A Whiff from Staffs’. My epitome updates the sarcasm in addition to turns it around. Today the Staffordshire Pottery Industry has declined. Bottle kilns are rare and many terraces have gone, areas of derelict province convey been reclaimed past times nature. The Potteries every bit a National Park requires a restrict of the imagination, but the ‘buddleia city’ that is Stoke-on-Trent today is a changing city. I’m non certain if economic science in addition to wasteland can ever be paradise but the lungs of the metropolis are finally getting their fresh air!’Other prizewinners were
- Indian-born Shanti Panchal won the £6,000 2nd prize for his locomote Cadence of the Heart. His paintings are amazing for the character of the complete he gets i his work. I'd honey to know how he does it.

- The Smith & Williamson Cityscape Prize of £1,500 was won past times Chris Myers RI RBA for Fragile - a catch of the Olympic Park. I ever mean value compositions when using a panorama format are a existent challenge - but I mean value this 1 plant actually well. The painterly epitome of pocket-size details inwards a agency which makes them await similar realism is too masterly

Being a large fan of "views" paintings in addition to the role of pen in addition to ink I absolutely loved the 2 paintings past times Catharine Davison whose locomote I've never seen before. I'm going to live taking a long irksome wander unopen to her website.
